Love Can Wait

Love Can Wait

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

People say you’re views on love

Are awfully pessimistic

The truth is they don’t know you at all

Not well enough to pass judgment

You jumped into your first relationship

With all the hope of a girl your age

And he broke your heart, no surprise

With all the grace of a boy his age

You tried again a later year

With a boy who was filled with fear

Come college you’d made up your mind

Love wasn’t worth your time

What they don’t know is you still believe

That certain people have soul mates

You still think love can be a beautiful thing

And something in need of treasuring

All those years you felt lonely

They told you there was more to life

Then you finally accepted your singlehood

And now they think you need a man

When you’re unhappy being alone

They tell you to get over it

When you say you’re learning to love yourself

They say you must love somebody else

They sat at your age it’s not natural

To not be going out on dates

And in response to them you say

Love’s wonderful, but it can wait
