Buried in the Yard

Buried in the Yard

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

You won't watch me graduate

You won't see me down the aisle

You'll never hold my babies in your arms

They won't even know who you are

I won't burden them with that truth

You won't have that special dance

You'll never meet the man

Who makes all my dreams come true

My children won't ever crawl up on your lap

They won't look up to you like I used to

They'll never know a broken home

They'll never experience such disappointment

I'll do everything I can

To shield them from my heartache

They won't shed the tears I have

And someday they'll open up that drawer

and inside they'll find your picture

and they'll ask me “Momma, who is this?”

and I'll tell them “No one important”

and they'll bury it in a time capsule in the backyard

And twenty years from now

a boy will dig it up

and inside he'll find your picture

but he won't know who you are

and the saddest part of all is neither do I
