A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas
"

I would like to clarify, because I know people will assume it is, but this is NOT about my dad. I love for people to speculate what my writing is about, but sometimes assumptions are hurtful.

"

The love you feel for your child

Was supposed to be unconditional

Perhaps I was a fool

But I thought you thought of me a daughter

How can you raise a child

Only to turn your back on her later?

How can you not make an effort?

You just give up like she's a lost cause

Romantic relationships will come and go

But how could you love a child

And then leave her like you would a lover?
How can you sleep at night knowing you broke her heart

People fall out of love all the time

But the love you feel for a child

Was supposed to be different

You weren't supposed to stop loving her

Can't you see what you're doing to her?
Behind all those hostile glares

Is a girl who's hurting on the inside

If you only bothered to look

How can you forget everything you shared?
How can you just walk away?

How could you toss her away like she was trash?
How could you abandon your family?

Perhaps I was a fool

Maybe it was something I did wrong

I guess I'll never know

I guess you just stopped loving me
