Some people use pictures to create memory, I don't. The thing about me is that every time I travel, a distinct aroma, smell, stench, whatever you call it sticks with me. The smell of sweat and exotic flavours brings me back to Thailand. While the smell of burnt rubber being burnt in noon reminds me of the late night walks in that small town, forgotten in Ethiopia. The strange thing is that while my western friends distinguish such smells, I cherish them because they bring back memories, memories that cannot be replaced with photographs or videos. I think these are the things that make a traveller passionate to discover different places, tastes and smells because literally everything you do is a memory.
Very true! A simple smell can bring back a flood of memories! For me this tends to happen more often with things that I smelled for awhile for some discrete point in time, like a lotion or perfume, but anything that strikes that memory, and the way smells revive memories is unique too. I am not sure if you mean to use the word "distinguish"?
