Connections

written for awareness of autism

You met my eyes today

just for a moment and

I thought you might smile.

We both held our breath,

uncertain of how long

this connection might last.

Something like apology

flashed across those dark Iris's

before your attention

veered off into some other space.

I breathed again.

You met my eyes today

just for a moment...

and my heart sang.
