Pandora's Maybe

Pandora's Maybe

A Poem by Marie Anzalone

for M.

My heart is a resting place;

       It contains a dead "maybe"

  like a forgotten leftover

           from the days

    of Pandora-

       [the original, not

   the music library that tries

 but cannot distinguish female vocalists

    and musical themes, but I digress].

I told you many things

     that night, but not this:

 that when you embraced me,

      held my ear against your chest,

   stroked my ribs with your fingertips...

      you may have performed

            a small miracle.

Conversation drifted only into safe waters;

    we spoke of cannots

and could nots

    and all of the reasons

  it simply would not be a good idea-

      of barriers and distance;

    old hurts, and what simply

   was NOT there.

What I did not tell you was this:

    your kiss gave resuscitation

       to a long dormant hope;

      in your arms, a "maybe"

felt safe enough to flutter its delicate wings

      and stirred its legs, one at a time,

          all six vying for purchase

        just once each, on my heart's

    innermost chamber.

Since then, love songs by female vocalists

    no longer sound the same

  and I think that "maybe" is trying

       to escape its tomb,

   brave the rapids of my blood,

          reach my open hands...

    and become a small gift

            for you?

'.. in your arms, a "maybe" ~ felt safe enough to flutter its delicate wings ..' .. a would be lover prays and undoubtedly years for that feeling.

You create extraordinary phrases and yet, simple they are, and honest. Could say more but would spoil the feeling i'm taking away with me. Thank you.

This opens some old boxes within my heart as well, how you have such a knack for writing the very things I seem to be feeling, and that is what makes you such an incredible poet, your fingers on the pulse of the under currents of life, so beautiful Marie as always.
