First Kiss

First Kiss

A Poem by Marie Anzalone

We knew-

because all the ancient gods

stopped their shenanigans

to watch, and see

what came next. It was,

after all, their doing.

It was the taste

of 5000 years

of human language

explored by two tongues,

and rewritten entirely

within 45 minutes.

it was the way the timid deer

of my heart fearlessly

walked into the lair built

by the wolf of your heart,

and awaited sentencing.

It was me ripping a rib

out of my own chest, and giving

it this time

to the man -you-

for him to fashion his own god

in a new image.

It was how our lives depended

so much on the initiation

and nothing

on the outcome; it was the first

being the last, the last

becoming the prelude.

It was the way

you dashed your own soul into

pieces against the rocks

so as to not break the hearts

of both who loved you.

It was smiling at you

with my eyes, tasting you

with my hands, testing you

with my mouth, challenging you

as I ran fingers through

your hair; sun and birdsong

turned to honey that you fed me

drop by drop, from an oak leaf.

It was the oldest trees

of that forest, that afternoon,

bowing to place crowns

of thorns and flowers

upon our heads,

proclaiming us the king

and queen of one

perfect moment of

alternative human history.

Author's Note

Marie Anzalone
Born of a silly conversation prompt turned writing prompt. "Whre was your best or otherwise most memorable first kiss with someone?" The rest, as they say, is history.

Picture is my own, a tree bowing under the weight of sonw after a storm.

this was translated from its original in Spanish, which can be found here:

Such an extraordinary, glorious poem, am bathing
in its after-glow. Your words could have grown from seeds planted long, long ago, they're tantamount to magicking Life from air and all. And with it came the true seed of life itself.. LOVE.

I know this is a translation but you've placed the words in such a way, both emotion and skill is displayed. Beautiful, R.. absolutely. xx

Picture of your first kiss?
Amazing imagery starting with the first stanza- any kiss that can stop shenanigans of the gods has to be some kiss! Crowns of thorns and flowers- sums up the love thing!
