looking for editing gigs

A Story by Marie Anzalone
"

I am a professional editor, and my publishing house has no work for me for the moment.

"

Good morning/ afternoon/ evening (depending on where you are). I am reaching out directly to my community of avid readers, writers, poets, and editors. I want to ask for help finding employment to support my life’s work.

I am looking for part-time work as an editor, writing coach, content writer, grant writer, or translator.

I am available to start in September and am looking for gigs to take me into February of 2026, then again after April 2026.

***

I love helping people get their work ready for publishing, all stages- either self-publishing, hybrid, or traditional.

Genres where I have the best background:

Fiction: Literary fiction, science fiction (hard and soft), fantasy, horror, erotica, crossover, children’s (age 8 and up). Not so much in romance, religious, AI generated anything.

Non-Fiction: Poetry, memoir, biography, autobiography, world history, social and natural sciences, nature, budget travel, outdoor, art, creative non-fiction, spiritual, esoteric, abuse and trauma recovery, educational (ages 8 and up), life coaching, humor, philosophy, social entrepreneurship, life transition, women’s empowerment, thesis design.

Not so much: pseudoscience, red pill, propaganda, shallow self-help. I like factually informed deep dive explorations. Also do not know enough about the comic book/ Manga genres to be of much help there.

I help authors with developmental edits, research, book/ proposal design, content layout, character development, copy writing, ghost writing, and copy/ line edits, depending on where they are in the process. I also do Spanish to English translation and I teach in both languages.

I have successfully worked for over 1000 clients and students and helped 18 people publish their books. I have written and published 9 of my own books, with the 10th and 11th on their way.

I also love writing evidence-supported essays that touch on deep subjects, and am very good with scientifically informed content on a variety of subjects. I have previously written successfully on topics such as solar power systems, biomedical research, natural history, hydrology and water use, research ethics, climate adaptation and mitigation, urban shamanism, end of life preparations, literary evaluation, improving your writing, life coaching for meaning, cooking adaptations, sexual abuse and recovery, art techniques, grant writing, complex program design, monitoring and evaluation, and developing a love for lifelong learning- among many others.

I have additionally translated articles, menus, business promotions, grant applications, federal guidelines, journalism pieces, human resources material, international development programs, and other content between English and Spanish.

I teach three full standalone courses, and offer a series of guided seminars, classes, 1:1 sessions, and custom coaching content; or the complete courses to interested users. Those three courses are:

a)      Grant writing

b)     Writing with Courage

c)      Complex program design and management

I am asking that, if you know anyone in your circle who might be able to use my services, to please reach out to me. Being able to eat and pay my bills are high priorities for me.

I live and work in Guatemala, which means that I bring over 30 years of writing and editing experience at professional but accessible rates. I am willing to work on payment plans, and work within a client’s budget. In my work, I strive to meet these 7 goals:

a)      Build the writer’s confidence and help them enjoy the writing and learning process

b)     Create a coherent manuscript that shines

c)      Retain the author’s voice, pretext, vision, and context

d)     Walk an author through options for publishing, if they do not already have a strategy in mind

e)      Provide useful and factually correct information in an easily digestible manner

f)        Bring great and important stories to life

g)      Coach the writer through pertinent life skills that will take with them long after they leave my care.

If you or someone you know is swamped with deadlines for written content, needs content for your blog, are writing your memoir, are gathering recipes for the family cookbook, are thinking of starting a novel, are finishing a novel, etc.- I would love to talk to you/ them.

You can see my work profile on LinkedIn and my professional writer’s profile on Goodreads (because I worked for the government, I started my professional publication career under a pen name, which I use for fiction and poetry).

My Linked In profile has writing samples of essays I have written, and my Goodreads profile connects to a writing blog I maintain. You can see more of my writing work on my writers blog “Cold, Hungry, and In love,” and “Alticultura.”

Thank you for taking the time to read this! I am looking to give 20 hours per week.
