Asleep

Asleep

A Poem by Hunter Hoburg

The glow of reflected light from the lake

Shifts across my face, beckoning me in.

In my lap is every letter I never sent to you;

The pleas for mercy and the prayers for another chance.

Wasted words or struggles conquered?

Behind me stretches the peak, where

I looked at the happier people in the distance

Petals clutched in hand

And for the first time asked your forgiveness.

I grip the bundles of letters and begin for the water

I know at the bottom of this lake awaits a city;

Something once whole, and a fitting

Resting place for we who are drowned the same.

The small waves lap at my feet, my legs, my torso

And as I exhale my last breath,

I pray that this be the moment

When I finally awake.
