The Cold Night Sky

The Cold Night Sky

A Poem by H.L. Cerveise

The Cold Night Sky

I feel so very small and infinitesimal,
and in silence, I stand as darkness surrounds me.
Noise that drowns out the quiet is no more
for it causes pain of heart and mind.
I close my eyes against the bright light
         that burns the pitch blackness.
The breeze against my skin that was once warm
is now bitter cold sending chills that shake my body.
The wonders that once existed and exist
         are beyond my tiny grasp.
A voice before that was strong and clear
is now faulty, dry and murky.
I lift my head skyward as I stand in the cold abyss of the night,
and I see the stars that seem so far apart from each other.
Stars who burn with such heat that they fuse matter,
but I do not feel their warmth and only dimly see their light.
My mind knows they are so vastly far away;
however, my heart tries to reach towards each tiny point of energy.
I wonder is someone out there looking my way
and thinking they also feel so very small and infinitesimal.
