What happened to...?

What happened to...?

A Poem by H.L. Cerveise

What happened to...?

What happened to the dim light shining through the darkness?
Where are the promises that were made?
What happened to innocence?

What happened to the soft warm touch in the night?
Where are the feelings of ecstasy?
What happened to the closeness?

What happened to all the years?
Where did they flee?
What happened to my body?

What happened to the dreams and visions?
Where do they come from?
What happened to my mind?

What happened to the boundless spirit within?
Where does that spirit wonder now?
What happened to my eyes, they see clearer now?

Yes, a series of questions I also ask, some more than others. Again, this has a universal tone, with some subjectivity sliced in here and there. But so many of us ask these questions at different points in our lives. The poet's voice comes through- these are your questions- but they are also ours, as human beings. The dark night of the soul, individually and collectively, may be upon us, if we stay with these questions, looking inward, whether individually, in our cities, as families, as nations. The dark night has its place to deepen us. Whatever is on the other side of these questions - how we answer them - determines what we look forward to next. But in the dark night, being present to it, accepting this is where we are- is part of the process. Wish we could skip ahead and know the answers. Good questions, great expression of how these questions shape our vision of what is present, and what can be. Thank you.
