Little science lesson (05/31/09)

A by Gazelle

Once again, an amazing conversation with a six year old who has my heart:

Son: What's a white blood cell?

Mommy (thought): Oh crap! I thought this was in third grade at least. Lets see...
Mommy: Weeeelllll...white blood cells help keep us healthy.

Son: How do they do that?

Mommy (thought): Why do we always have to have these conversations in the car when I have no access to the computer? Why can't I google this right now?!?!?
Mommy: Weeeeelll...they attack the bad things that get into our bodies and make us sick.
Mommy (thought): Oh god, please don't ask for details on what the bad things are...

Son: So they fight the bad things? So they're kinda like knights then?

Mommy (thought): Thank god! This I can work with...
Mommy: Exactly!!! When the bad things get into our bodies the knights attack them and kill the bad things.
Mommy (thought): Should I have said "kill"? Maybe "run them off", "negotiate a peace treaty"...nah! Bad things in your body require killing.

Son: Cooooool!

Mommy (thought): Yes! I scored cool points!

Son: So the bad things are kind of like dragons?

Mommy (thought): OMG! I love my son! He is sooooo awesome!!!
Mommy: Exactly!!! Fire breathing dragons.

Son: So that's why we get a fever?

Mommy: You are so smart, you know that? Yes. It's because the battle between the knights and the dragons gets really heated. It's a sign that your knights are fighting the dragons off. When you get too hot though it's a sign that your knights are in need of some back up and that's when we go to the doctor for antibiotics.

Son: So what do the antibiotics do?

Mommy (thought): Oh yeah, I know the answer to this one...
Mommy: The antibiotics give your knights a power boost.

Son: Coooool!!! Do they get super powers?

Mommy (thought): Cool points again. I rock!
Mommy: Yes! Super strength...

Son: Ice storm or lightning?

Mommy (thought): Oops! Maybe this is going a little too far into fantasy land better get it back on track.
Mommy: No fire, ice, or wind powers buddy. It's more like increasing their armor or strength abilities.

Son: Momma, that's cool.

Mommy (thought): No, that's you little man. Too cool.
Mommy: Yup. So whaddya wanna have for dinner when we get home?

Son: I dunno. What are sinuses?

Mommy (thought): Almost home...must remember to buy him a book on science and anatomy for kids...
Mommy: Weeeelllll......

I love it~! This is great I felt like I was there. Interesting styling with the "Mommy (thought):..." and then the "Mommy:..."

Cute kid, and the "cool points" *great* touch.
