We are outnumbered. The other people in my group are firing as fast as they can in to the mass of zombies. I am low on ammo and separated from my men by nearly 500 of those flesh-eating creeps.

“HOW THE HELL IM I GONNA GET TO YOU GUYS!” I scream into the radio.

“I don’t know, sir.” came the reply.

I do an ammo count. 50 rounds for my M16. 40 for my .45 hand gun.

“Damn it not enough,” I swear. “how the hell did I get into this mess!”

I was scouting the area around our camp when they hit. I was trying to set up a perimeter but I was only half way done when they came. I was one a mountain perfectly level with the main camp. I haven’t been sensed by the zombies yet but that leaves 500 zombies versus ten humans.

“Sir,” I hear over my radio ”we need your help, Austin, Nick, and Andy have all been taken, there’s only the seven of us!”

“Crap.” was all I could say.

Three civilians, three special ops operatives, and a SWAT member, not enough firepower can be used at once to get all the zombies.

It hit me then. Bombs, pipe bombs to be exact. We can blow the crap right out of these zombies. It just might work to get us out of here.

“Zane are you there?”

“Yes, what is it sir?”

“Pipe bombs, however many you need to blow the hell out of those zombies.”

“Alright, give us a second.”

A minute later I witnessed a series of explosions that killed all but a dozen of the zombies.

“GO NOW!” I yelled.

Less then thirty seconds later I was at the road. When the cars drove by I jumped onto the bed of the pick-up that was leading the convoy.

“Hi James” I was greeted by the driver.

“Hi Niki.” I panted.

“How many bombs were used?” I asked.

“Five, we have 15 left.”

“So we‘re back down to the original seven?”

“Yeah”

Niki, Zane, Kyle, Kate, Matt and I were all from the same town. Me, Zane, and Niki were all part of an elite special ops team. When we landed in Windsor, our home town we saw what the virus was doing. We quickly got into quarantine suits and started looking for survivors. All most instantly, we met up with Kyle, who was leading Kate, Matt, and Cyle to our base.

After we met up with them we went searching for vehicles. We decided on a semi-truck with a trailer, two pick-up trucks, and a van.

We loaded the semi with food, gas, and a lot of ammunition. The pickups each had a .50 cal. chain gun mounted to their beds. The van was just used as a personnel transport, for non military and non drivers.

Weapons and gas are our main lifeline in this post-apocalyptic struggle for survival. Our weapons include the two chain guns, a dozen M16s, and an assortment of pistols ranging from .223 to .45s. We were able to find thousands of rounds of ammunition for all of these weapons. Kyle has a katana that he uses if in close combat, and we each have fighting knives with 12” blades for the same reason.

After we were loaded with supplies we headed east, to Nevada. It was there that we met up with Andy, Nick, and Austin.

Back to now. We need to get out of this area. We have all learned that where there is one enemy there is most likely more. I want to head north where there are more munitions and supplies. We are currently in Colorado and I want to get to northern Canada, where I had stashed a cache of weapons and supplies because my squad and I did a lot of missions in that area.

“Niki,” I broke the silence. “we need to head to the Canada stash.”

“James, how do we even know it is still there?”

“I made sure to move it before we left to come to this mess, I’m the only one who can find it.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Whoever created the thing that’s turning humans into zombies made a horrible mistake. No one can control these creatures. They are the worst enemy my team has ever faced, and that is including Al Qaeda’s elite terrorists, who we had to fight using nothing but knives and .22s.

“Do you ever think about if we had to face our own family and friends when they have been turned?” I ask Niki.

“Don’t you even think like that!” was her response.

I decide it might be best to be silent for a while, so I go to my station at the chain gun.

Two hours later we pull up to a abandoned gas station.

“We’ll make camp here”

“Ok I’ll set up the defenses.”

As I watched Niki walk away I I had a strange feeling. I have known niki for years and she is one of my best friends, second only to Zane. What would I do if I lost her? I have never had this thought before this day, the day I nearly lost everybody. I need to quit blaming myself! I need to quit letting these thoughts consume me! I will Not lose anymore people, I try convincing myself that.

“Sir,” Zane pulls me out of my thoughts. “sir we need to check this out.”

“What do you need?” I demand.

“There are two people inside, two LIVE girls actually.”

“What? I’ll be in there in a second.”

As Zane walks away I go back to thinking, only this time its about what I just heard. Two girls, alive? How can they have survived for so long and be alone? I am suspicious of this. The odds are worse then actually winning the lotto. I better go check this out, and ill be ready for trouble.

All was silent when I entered the room where I was told the girls were. The girls are young, at least compared to my group. The girls are most likely 18 or 19, no older then 21. The younger looking one had shoulder length brown hair, and was only 5’4”. The older one had short blonde hair and was about 5’5”. Both look starving.

“w-w-who ar-are you?” asks the blonde one.

I don’t respond but look at the faces on my teams, all had a look of pity, except Kyle’s. Could these two young girls be bait for a trap, or can they be the trap?

The younger girl is now staring at the rifle I have pointed at them.

“Who are you two?” Niki demands of the girls.

“I am Kelsey, and she is Shay.” Says the blonde one.

“Do you have any food?” Shay asks timidly.

Should I allow these girls to eat? Everybody is looking at me to see what I do. Can I spare two meals? What if I have to take them with us? Can I afford feeding them and driving them? I have been debating ditching the van but if these two come we’ll need it again.

I nod to Kate, our person in charge of food, to feed them.

“Niki, Zane we need to go to the other room for a second, Cyle, you stand guard over these two.” I said

Once out of earshot of the girls I turn to Zane and Niki.

“What are you thinking?” Zane says to me.

“I don’t know what we should do about these two.”

“I say we should take them.” Niki said. “We can watch every move they make if we do.” she added to the quizzical look on my face.

“Zane, what do you think about this?”

“I don’t know, sir, I don’t want to get killed in my sleep but I also don’t want to let these girls starve.

Kyle pokes his head around a corner and said “We need to move out, NOW!”

“What? Why?” demands Zane.

“I just saw a huge wave of zombies that are only a few miles back, and they’re heading this way!”

“Ok. Take the girls and put them into the van and be sure to keep an eye on them. If either of them makes a move that looks hostile, shoot both of them.

We don’t have enough ammo to get into a avoidable fight. If we leave now we will be as safe as ever, except I’m still not sure about those girls, what about them makes me so uneasy? If Niki didn’t want them I would have left them here.

In the truck, where it is, as always, just me and Niki, I decide to ask her what her reasoning was.

“Niki?”

“Yes?”

“Why did you want those girls to come with us?” I ask her. “You know we’re low on supplies and now we have two extra mouths to feed.”

“You didn’t see the looks on their faces when I first found them. They were so happy to see a living person that I almost cried with them.”

“We still should have taken what we needed and left them.”

She glares over her shoulder at me, then remains silent for five minutes.

“Where are we going, sir?” she doesn’t call me ‘sir’ unless she is angry with me. What did I do to deserve her anger, besides trying to choose the best way to survive.

“We head North, we need to get to that stash before we even stand a chance.”

“OK.”

I glance into the mirror. Wow I’ve changed more then I thought. I used to be around 6’3’ and 250lbs, almost all muscle. Now I’m still the same height but I look scrawny, I must weigh under 200lbs. My normal short blonde hair has grown out to shoulder length and looks brown from all the dust. My light skin is now tanned to a light brown.

I am not the only one who has changed. Niki used to be 5’8” weighing roughly 130lbs, all of it muscle. She must weigh around 100lbs. She used to have shoulder length blonde hair but now it has grown out to her mid-back and is dirty, yet not as bad as mine. Zane is the only one of us who hasn’t really changed, he always has been a skinny, short guy. He has long, tangled, dark brown hair. He looks exactly the same.

After several hours of driving we come across a abandoned town. We head to the nearest gas station and to my surprise there is gas! Kate, and Zane head to a store to see if they can find any supplies. They do. It appears everybody in this town got out too fast to plan, or pack, oh well all the better for us.

Kate and Zane return from the store with armfuls of food.

“Sir,” Zane says. “we have enough supplies in this town to last all of us another couple weeks, if we don’t eat to much maybe twice that long.”

“Good, take anything that is canned or preserved and load them up.” I ordered. “Also, if there is any alcohol in there we’ll need that too.” As Kate and Zane went back to the store, I started wondering where we were. It looked to be a desert but something was strange about it. There were dead trees all over the place, the types of trees that don’t grow in deserts. The town appeared to be abandoned but there were too many and too large of buildings to search for zombies, let alone the fact that we are all exhausted.

Niki, Kyle, Matt and Cyle, the drivers, are all sleeping. I want at least two people on guard now that those to girls are with us. We will have one person be on normal guard and one person pretend to be asleep and watching the girls. Kelsey and Shay will not be asked to do a guard shift. I have made it clear to them, through Kyle, that they are to be as helpful as possible without being constantly in our way, or else I ditch them at the next stop. They agreed with these terms, but who wouldn’t?

Damn it, why couldn’t I have just ignored Niki and left those girls at their gas station? Well at least karma is working for us. We took those girls and now we have gas and food. I was thinking we weren’t going to make it but now we might make it, if we don’t get into big fights.

As I am thinking those thoughts I start to doze.

When I next awake it is sunrise, why wasn’t I awaken at midnight for my guard duty? I glance into the cab of the truck, where Niki was sleeping, she’s in there breathing softly. I move slowly, to not wake her. Once out of the bed of the truck I walk over to the other pickup and look for Zane and Cyle. Cyle is sleeping in the cab of the truck. When I look in the bed for Zane I see that he is gone. Why would he just take off like this? It is Kyle’s shift yet Zane isn’t where he belongs.

I hurry over to the van to see if those girls are there, they are. I go to the semi and see that Matt is doing his duty, pretending to be asleep and watching the van.

“Where is Zane?” I ask.

“I don’t know, no one has moved, except you and Kyle since I’ve started watching the van.”

“Damn,” I mutter. “where could he have gone?”

“I saw movement in the back of the store about 20 minutes ago.”

“Ok, I want you to keep watching the van, but report any suspicious movements strait to me. Remember Kyle and I are both going to be moving around out there.”

I go to my truck and grab my M16. I check the clip, fully loaded. I then make sure I have my side arm, today a .223, and that it is loaded.

“Where the hell would Zane have gone?” I asked myself.

Zane has never done this before. Even if he isn’t tired and wants to take a second shift he makes it a point to wake me so I don’t worry. This is not like him, he was exhausted when I last saw him.

I head to the store to look in there for him.

The hinges don’t squeak as I open the door, how odd. The store front is very dusty, to the point that I can see the foot prints from the people packing the food earlier. I here a movement behind me.

Just the wind. I’m jumpy. I see a door leading into the back of the building. Should I go to it? I see two pairs of footprints leading to the door, none comeing back.

“It must be the back entrance” I tell myself.

I open the door. I get hit by a stale musky smell.

“Or not” I cough. I shine my flashlight into the room, it is a office, most likely the old managers. I see another door at the opposite end of the room then me.

I open the other door. As I step through I get hit on the head and I black out.

“James? James!?” I start coming to. “please wake up, JAMES!” It is Niki and Kate who found me.

I try to speak but as soon as I took a deep breath my throat feels like its on fire. I wince.

“Kate go get water and Asprin!”

“We only have on bottle of Asprin left, are you sure you need it?”

Niki looks at my face then back up to Kate.

“Yes he needs it, now go get or do I have to go get it myself.”

The next time Niki looks at me I see why she didn’t get it herself, she has tears in her eyes.

“What’s wrong?” I croak.

“What? Oh, uh, nothing just,” she looks away. “I just thought that I, uh we lost you.”

Now why would she be so worked up about that? I guess it makes sense, I have been the person who have been leading our group since boot camp.

“Niki I got the stuff,” Kate pants as she comes around into my view.

Niki opens the bottle of water and pours a small mouthful into my mouth. She then takes two Asprin and grind them to dust. She drinks all but a mouthful of the water and puts the ground-up pain killer into it. Niki shakes the Bottle, after putting the lid on then pours water slowly into my mouth. The water feels so soothing as it trickles down my parched throat.

“Starting to feel better?” Niki asks me. I nod.

“How long have I been out here?” I say, fighting the pain in my throat.

“I don’t know when you were knocked out, but it is now seven in the afternoon. We looked all day and then Kate saw drag marks and she ran to me to come help her follow it. We are over a mile from town now.”

I look around me for the first time. I didn’t relies I was out of town, I cant even remember where I was when I got hit. I take in my surroundings. There are bushes all around us and a couple old, dead trees.

“How’d she get the water and Asprin then?” I ask, sitting up for the first time.

“One of the truck pulled up a few hundred yards back. I warned them to come too close.”

I start to get up. I get hit by a dizzy spell so I sit right back down.

Damn what has happened to me? I used to have the ability to sense the presence of another person within the same room as me, but now someone was able to ambush me and survive. Zane, where is he? Did he return to camp or is he still missing. I better ask Niki.

“Niki, did Zane come back?”

“Yeah he came back shortly after I awoke.”

“Did you ask where he went?”

“He said he went down to Sporting good shop to see if there was any ammo left.”

“And was there?”

“No, it appears that the people in this town were at least smart enough to bring weapons and munitions.”

S**t I’m getting dizzy again I hope I don’t black-out….

When I next wake up it is night. I don’t know where I am but im covered with a blanket. Wait, I’m in the truck, how’d I get back? Ah, they must have carried me and put me in the bed of the truck to sleep. I look to my side, there a bottle of water and a cold sandwich sitting next to me. I try the water, my throat is better, good. I eat.

Suddenly there is gunfire off to my right. Damn it where is my gun? I feel around my make-shift bed. There it is! I grab my m16 and check the clip, good I’m loaded. I hear movement from inside the cab of the truck. I tap on the window. Niki looks through it at me, I signal her to stay quite and that I’m moving forward. I sneak out of the truck and to the next building, I check for enemies, there’s none. I glance back at the truck and motion Niki to follow me. When she catches up I signal her to cover me well I move to the next cover.

Once there I look towards the edge of town. Movement. Niki comes quietly up behind me and freezes.

“You see them?” I ask.

“Yeah, we need to identify them, it may be our night guard, Matt.”

“Ok I’ll move around this building and get behind him, you move parallel to him but keep him in sight.” She nods.

I quickly sneak around the building. I see the outline of two people talking quietly, so lightly that I cant even hear them from a distance of 50’ in the silence of night. I touch my hip and find my flashlight is still there I unclip it.

I glance to the right of them and see a hand sticking out from behind a dumpster. Its Niki and she is giving me a thumbs up, time to light them up.

“FREEZE I yell as I shine my Mag light into the peoples faces.”

Its Zane and Matt. I start to lower my weapon.

“Oh its you guys.” I say to them. Suddenly Zane raises is gun and points it at me. I automatically duck as it comes to bear on my head. He shoots, I here the shot fly over my head.

“Stop its me, James!” I yell.

Zane gets a smirk across his face as he switches to my new position behind a trash can. I roll behind a wall a second before 00-buckshot rips through the area where my head occupied.

What the hell is going on? Why would Zane shoot at me? I hope Niki doesn’t reveal her hiding spot. Suddenly there is more gunfire and a blood curtailing scream that doesn’t sound quite natural, who was hit? I look around the corner there’s Zane and Matt closing in on Niki. I raise my weapon just as Matt brings his own gun to bear on Niki again. I take quick aim at the back of his head. I shoot.

Zane runs even as Matt falls. I cant wrap my mind around this, why the hell would my own men attack us? Oh well, just forget about it. Niki must be hurt. I run to her.

“What happened?” she says when I get to her. There is blood soaking through her clothes on the right side of her chest.

“You were shot.”

“By who?”

“Either Zane or Matt and by the look of this wound it was Matt, Zane was using a shotgun on me.”

“Why the hell would they fight us?”

“I don’t know, I just don’t know.” I reply. “I’m just worried about you right now. Let me take care of your wound and make sure you’ll be all right.”

I tear Niki’s shirt enough to reveal the bullet hole right over her right breast. I feel her back for an exit wound. I find it in back of her shoulder. I grab a bottle of water and some whiskey from Niki’s pack. I use the water to rinse the blood out of her wound and then u tear off some of my shirt and tell Niki to put it in her mouth and bight it. After she has done this I take the whiskey and poor a small amount of the alcohol into the wound. Niki bights the cloth hard grabs my arm in a vice-grip and winces, all at the same time. After I clean the liquor out of the wound I tear another long piece of my shirt and I wrap into tightly around Niki’s shoulder wound, I repeat the process with her chest.

I then pick her up and run to the cars where I’m confronted by Kyle with a .45 colt in my face.. When I identify myself he holsters his weapon and helps me get Niki into the back of the truck.

________________________________________________________________________

“Damn it Kyle, get out of my way!”

“James, she has been sleeping for two hours she might still live.”

“I know this, now stand guard over her well I go kill the b*****d who did this!”

“You‘ve already killed Matt, and Zane is long gone by now.”

“Where the hell is he supposed to go! He doesn’t have a vehicle and few, if any supplies. We surprised him last night he wasn’t expecting a fight or else he would have chosen a better point for it. The person responsible for Niki’s injuries is most likely no more then two miles away from us right now and all he has in the way of weapons is that shotgun and a side-arm unless he stashed more.”

“But why would they fight you?”

“I don’t know, I just don’t know. Wait a second, where are Shay and Kelsey?”

“uhhhh,” Kyle glances towards the van. “I left them when I heard the shots, they must have fled.”
