Manny Skayton’s Favorite Book

Manny Skayton’s Favorite Book

A Story by BlueShadow

Whenever school ended in North High School, Manny went home and plopped on the bed in his room and napped for half an hour. After finishing napping, he got up from bed and started homework. Sometimes, the homework would be about math, sometimes chemistry, and sometimes English. Manny loved to do a little bit of homework since he thought just a small bit would make him more intelligent. Homework overall, however, was a chore. It was boring, somewhat unnecessary, and tedious. Homework was something Manny had to do every day to get good grades in his classes. Once he finished a pile of homework, he got up from his desk and went out to his house’s patio, where he would lounge for an hour. It was refreshing to take in the crisp, clean air of the outside and be content with what you had. His house’s patio was ten square feet and had a table, and slanted roof. He loved to lounge on the patio because it was so relaxing, fun, and calming. He felt so lucky to live in a house with a patio.

After lounging, he would then go back inside and see what to do next. Sometimes he would practice his guitar, sometimes he would feed his pet fish, and sometimes he would nap again. But usually, what he did was that he picked a book from his bookshelf. His bookshelf had one hundred books and were varied in content and genre. Some of his books were about history, others were about science, and some were about sports. It was a difficult time for Manny because he loved to read about anything, as long as it was interesting and fun. Manny read at around seven in the evening and would fall asleep shortly afterwards. It was one of his favorite times of the day.

It was June 17th and school had ended but Manny was still hungry for knowledge. He went home, did his usual routine of chores, lounging, and eating, and decided it was time to pick up a story. Manny scoured his bookshelf and looked for something that would intrigue him and occupy some of his time. He finally found the right book, titled Cornucopia, written by Jim Fire, and was amazed by its beautiful cover; an array of fruit that covered the book’s hardcover front. It was a rather long book, being five hundred pages long. Manny wasn’t sure what drew him to the book, but he admired its design and interesting first chapter. Manny thought this book was going to be a blast.

Manny read the first chapter and loved the introduction. The introduction was about a group of Danish travelers who found a new land and they discovered that this new land was full of fruit. Manny loved fruit so much because of how delicious, aesthetically pleasing, and varied they were. He enjoyed reading the first chapter of Cornucopia and found the book’s setting to be well-described. The book went on about how the settlers gradually learned about this new land they were on and how they were going to explore it and eventually name it. Manny thought this book was unique because of its depth, beautiful description of the scenery, and wonderful characterization. Cornucopia was a well-written book full of interesting characters, ideas, and wordplay. Manny enjoyed reading this book because of its amazingly thorough and complete description of the landscape. After pondering about the books he had read before, he came to the conclusion that Cornucopia was the best book he had read. Manny loved to read, so this was quite a book. He would reread it over and over again to appreciate it more and more. His reading of Cornucopia made him feel more intelligent, thoughtful, and interesting. He loved his new, favorite book.
