Manny Skayton’s New Radio

Manny Skayton’s New Radio

A Story by BlueShadow

Manny Skayton worked as a project manager at a financial firm in Reading. He liked his job a lot but was kind of tired of sitting in a cubicle all day long and typing on the computer. He earned a decent wage but was in need of something else. He had food, water, a rooftop, clothes, and a bunch of other things a person needs when living on Earth. Manny was so excited to have a job, but it was quite a boring and depressing job, to be honest.

Manny came home from work one evening at five in the evening and was pleased to see his beagle, Gary, eating food and drinking water happily. Manny sat down on the sofa and watched some television and was shocked at the uptick in violent crime lately. He was stunned at how much crime there was in Reading that he didn’t know about. Watching the news enabled Manny to feel more aware of his hometown. He was often sullen when he saw the news. The news always had something negative to report, and many of the times it was extremely negative. Manny watched the news and was saddened.

One of Manny’s favorite pastimes was playing the guitar. He owned a two-hundred dollar guitar that could play beautiful chords, melodies, and songs. Whenever he played his guitar he always felt so at peace. His playing wasn’t particularly the best, but it made other people feel so good. His playing was mediocre, but Manny played because he loved playing guitar, not because he was good at it.

One day, Manny went to Storica and bought a radio because he was interested in how they worked. He came home and turned on the radio and listened. Many of the songs were about love, some money, and some happiness. None of the songs particularly appealed to Manny because whenever he listened to the songs he felt bored. Love, money, and vanity were their main subjects. Manny loved his radio, but wished something appealing would come on.

After several hours of listening to the radio, Manny fell asleep and woke up after ten hours. He woke up to the sky picture perfect blue and the clouds perfectly white. Manny was amazed by how beautiful the outdoors looked and how picturesque the trees were. Today seemed unusually pretty. Manny went downstairs and ate his breakfast and listened to the radio. On it were singers, newscasters, and other people. He listened for an hour when something serendipitous happened. A beautiful song about overcoming sadness came on. He was stunned by the song’s poignant lyrics and deep meaning. The beauty was captured in its name, “Forever Peace”. The song was unusually beautiful in terms of its lyrics and message. Its style was that of country and Manny loved the simple yet deep lyrics that the song presented. Manny was pleased with the radio. Maybe it wasn’t so useless, after all, he thought.
