Preoccupation vs. Obsession

Most of us have something we like to do, whether it be cooking, playing an instrument, playing a sport, or studying. We love to do what we’re good at because it is fun, interesting, and productive. There is a fine line, however, between being preoccupied with something and being obsessed with it. To be preoccupied with something such as soccer means to be interested in it in a good way. Being preoccupied with something makes you really enjoy what you do. Being obsessed with something, however, makes you constantly think about it in a negative way and is bad for you. Being obsessed with a topic or thing makes you unable to focus on much else. Preoccupation is a good thing while obsession is a bad thing. I am in love with writing but I wouldn’t say I’m obsessed with it. I enjoy doing it, but it’s something that I do every now and then.
