Esperanza was the daughter of Ramona and Sixto Ortega, proud parents who admired their daughter's ability to do well in school, be brave, and to live in the house quietly. Esperanza was an extraordinarily bright and interesting young girl of 12 years of age. She was very good in school and knew basic concepts such as multiplication and literature well. She was extraordinarily good at learning Spanish at an advanced level and was extremely fond of being with her friends. She was very good at making other people feel happy. Esperanza loved her family's ranch they owned in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and was proud of her family's wealth and position in the city. Esperanza loved being in Aguascalientes and was so delighted to have the time of her life enjoying the simple pleasures like eating, sleeping, and playing with her friends. Esperanza was an exceptionally kind girl and a person who loved having fun. Esperanza enjoyed her serene and bucolic life greatly. It was a wonder and pleasure to be her.
Esperanza knew that her mom, Ramona, was an expert at crocheting because she had seen her make beautiful and warm and cozy blankets that made her life filled with warmth. Ramona was an amazing maker of blankets because she enjoyed the feel and the sense of accomplishment of making clothing and making our world filled with beauty and sophistication. Esperanza was proud of her mom's knitting ability and was delighted to have a blanket made by her mom for happiness and comfort. Esperanza was a wonderful and kind girl who loved life and enjoyed its merriments. Esperanza loved the feel and the comfort her mom's hard work gave. It was exceptionally fun and wonderful to be in the protective hands of her father and her mother. Esperanza loved the beautiful sky, breeze, and land. It was wonderful to absorb. Esperanza loved her life and enjoyed playing in the grape groves and the apple orchards. Esperanza was a happy and carefree girl. Her dad, Sixto, was a very hardworking ranch owner who counted the money they earned, secured the crops, and made sure everything was working properly. Sixto loved making the ranch more beautiful, interesting, and enjoyable to behold. Sixto loved his life, family, and land. It was so pleasant to be him because he was rich, never hungry, and always on the lookout for an adventure. Sixto was extremely humble and respected his neighbor's presence. Sixto thought that being a ranch owner was extremely fun and wonderful. Being a ranch owner entailed a lot of wealth but also many responsibilities. He grew apples, grapes, guavas, peaches, plums, and several fruits. It was difficult harvesting them when he had to but a joy nonetheless. Sixto was an extremely happy and kind man who loved the times of meeting with neighbors and conversing them, who were also ranch owners. Sixto was extremely happy with life but also a bit distressed about his stepbrothers, Uncle Marco and Uncle Luis. Uncle Marco was a man who enjoyed the birds chirping, the clouds floating, and being mayor. Being mayor was a difficult job but also one that gave him lots of power. He knew the population of Aguascalientes well and also loved the city's architecture. However, he was a bit afraid of the crime that went on and did nothing to stop it. Uncle Marco was jealous of Sixto's influence and decided to kill him to get the ranch and be more powerful. He did so and his life became more wealthy. The whole city mourned but they prayed for days on end and hoped that their lives would get better as they hoped for a bountiful harvest and crop extravaganza.
