The Watermelon

The Watermelon

A Poem by BlueShadow

For New Years Day I come quickly down the stairs
Remembering that I will receive a gift
From my parents' own savings account
And perhaps even their wallet

New Years Day is always exciting for the celebration
Love, joy, peace, and happiness
Abound in our celebratory dedication
New Years Day is the crown of the year's motion

I see my present wrapped in a green and red box
The box has a ribbon tied around it
I can't wait to see what I have gotten
Maybe I'll receive a new shirt, pants, or winter mitts

I open the present up quickly with glee
Opening the box is half the fun
And see inside the box with some disappointment
It's only a large watermelon
