Picturesque

Picturesque

A Poem by Allison Shurden

What is the definition of beautiful?
Is it a starry night sky in the peaceful countryside?
Or is it the snow-covered peaks in the middle of winter?
Could it be a megalopolis with never-ending skyscrapers?
Or is it the colorful sunset on a tropical island?
Who’s to say that these spectacular sights can’t all be beautiful?
Even if they are a bit… different?

It’s the same concept with people.
Beauty can be defined in different ways.
Amiability, kindness, patience, honesty- aren’t all of these qualities beautiful?
A pretty face isn’t the only beauty a person can possess—there are more significant traits in people.
Like being able to keep a secret, or loving everyone unconditionally..
Beauty isn’t about what hairstyle you wear, or the numbers on the scale…it’s about your attitude towards other people.

I would much rather befriend a person who is benevolent and altruistic than someone who is stunningly attractive yet rude or superior.
It is amazing that Hollywood can even try to convey to us that beauty is merely what a person looks like…
Hollywood’s idea of beauty is only on the outside… stick-thin and flawless.

Look at those wonderful role models!
Some actresses are so pressured about their weight they develop eating disorders!
Drug and alcohol consumption has reached an all-time high.
Yet these are the beautiful and flawless people… how ironic.

An example of true beauty would be a single mother who worked several jobs to have food on the table.
Genuine beauty would be a teenager who volunteered and helped her community willingly.
Real beauty would be a child that stood up to a bully.
Beauty isn’t a truth… it’s simply an judgment.

Sure a beautiful face will have people looking twice.
But you have to have more than that.
You have to have a kind heart, and you have to possess a good personality.
Once they get over the beautiful face, what’s left?
The most beautiful things in life have to be earned; like love and friendship.

That is my definition of beauty.
What’s yours?
