By The FiresideA Poem by The Hampstead Poet
There is a place; I'll tell you now
For suffering and fear reside Within this foggy, wandering world Where youth and laughter carefree hide A city far beyond the reach Of thy fleeting mortal soul Gleaming bright within the future Free of the present, human toll For evil once was cast away And never will it once return Replaced by its infallibility For that fire, hope, doth burn I tell you now, by the fireside As light ripples upon the walls To lift your spirit from this fog To keep you from night's jeering calls A place where death has lost its hold And spirits glow bright, for they know The darkness cannot reach this place The days are shadowed not by woe I weep for thee, and humankind For we are so far from this place I ask you to bring forth the light To shine upon this Earthen race For fiction is it, I don't know I tell you with my bated breath The dreams and lusts of mortality We all search for escape from death This world is cold, this world is wrong I cannot tell you all its faults For I have seen the evil that Lurks in the mist, in human vaults So I tell you by the fireside Gazing into those numbered flames As we beat back, for just a while The darkness that knows us by name Son, can you see it, for I'm afraid My sight is lost for the final time I cannot see the flickering light I cannot hear silver bells chime Just let me know that you can see A better world than that one I Had brought you forth, and cast the chains The place where humanity must die
