THE BOY AND THE LIGHTA Story by jamalTHE BOY AND THE LIGHTOnce upon a time, there was a boy who was told he was a monster. He was the weakest of his tribe. cowardly, scared, and alone. The world laughed at him, called him useless, and told him he didn't belong. And so, the boy gave up hope that he would ever be worthy or brave. Then one day, the boy saw her. The girl who was loved by the Light itself. He stood far away, watching the world gather around her, basking in her radiance. The strongest, the bravest, and the most beautiful of the tribe all fought for the attention of the Girl loved by the Light. But the Boy knew his destiny lay in the shadows. Whether by the curse of his birth or the roll of luck, the darkness was his only home. But from the dark, the boy realized something terrifying: The Light might not last forever. So, the boy decided he would capture the Light for her, so she would never be without it. He traveled high and far, asking the wise Council of Elders: "How do I capture the Light?" The Elders, who had always pitied the boy, told him it was impossible. They said, "The Light will eventually leave her. That is the way of the world." The boy fell to his knees, tears flowing into the cold earth. "Why her, Wise Elders?" he begged. "Why must she be cursed to lose everything, just like me?" The Elders looked down at the boy with sad eyes. "It is the natural passage of life," they said gently. "She is not cursed like you, boy. There is nothing to be done. You must accept the beauty of nature’s cycle." The boy refused to accept that outcome. He searched for a year, defying the Elders, until he found the Forgotten Sage. The Sage, cursed with immortality, had been there since the beginning of time. The Tribe had long forgotten he was once a man. By ancient law, every soul in the Tribe was granted exactly one chance in their lifetime to ask the Sage a question. But the Sage’s wisdom was a mirror; the answer depended entirely on the knowledge of the one asking. The Boy could have asked how to break his own curse. He could have asked how to be strong. But he did not. He spent his one precious question on the only thing that mattered. The boy asked: "How do I save her light? How do I capture what the Elders say is impossible?" The Sage looked at the boy and said: "The answer remains in you." The boy was confused. He had nothing. He was a monster. So the Sage spoke one last time: "To capture the eternal, you must face Three Trials. You must conquer the shame of your Past. You must endure the pain of the Present. And finally... you must seek out the one called Étendue, and have the courage to give up your Future." The boy stood in silence. He understood the price. He gathered his resolve and whispered: "I will do it. For her, I will pay it." The boy traveled to the edge of existence to face the King of Celestial Light, the one named Étendue. The King laughed, a sound that shook the stars. "Why does a cursed thing like you challenge me?" the King asked. The boy did not waver. He demanded a wager: "If I win the Eternal Fight, you must release the Light." The King smiled cruelly and granted the wish. "I accept," the King said. "But know this: Defeating me is only half the burden. Even if you win the war, you must still learn the secret to tame the chaos you unleash." The boy fought the King. He fought until the laws of the universe bent. And finally, he found a way to capture the light of the universe in a box. When he returned, he found the girl crying, with only a little spark remaining. He told her: "I will fix this. I promise you. Just wait for me." The boy worked night and day. He did not sleep. He did not stop. Until one day, he returned with a machine made of shadows and glass. The boy said to the girl: "From this day until the end of time, you will be known as the Lady of the Light. Now, turn on the machine. The Light is yours to play with forever." And for the first time in a long time, the boy smiled. He had faced the trials. He had given up his future so she could keep her light. The boy whom the world called a monster stepped back into the darkness. He returned to the shadows, never to be seen again.
