What I've Learned

What I've Learned

A Poem by Mariah

What I've learned
In the perpetuating absence of love
Is that love is gained through experience.
Maybe love can only occur when two individuals,
Both deeply broken and equally scarred,
Having nothing more left to give.
Their happiness and beauty have been soaked up by the careless intruders of their past.
They see not a long road in front of them,
But a dirt path growing shorter with every step they take.
When these two people meet,
They share the emptiness they radiate.
It is no longer about approval nor gain.
Intimacy becomes acceptance and understanding as opposed to appearance and attainment.
It is only when there is nothing left to gain,
And nothing left to lose,
That we find love.
But maybe what I've learned,
Is simply an abstract idea of the word,
After all,
I have felt nothing but
The absence of love.
