Night Train

Night Train

A Poem by Jennifer Martin
"

From the time I was a small child, the sound of trains in the distance, late at night, has been a source of comfort and delight, even with the odd sadness their visits inspire.

"

                      Night Train

A lonely train, through mist and rain,

pushes through the night.

With axels worn and rails shorn,

it journeys ‘til it’s light.

I lie in wait, anticipate,

the soothing, mellow sound.

The steady beat, as metals meet,

when wheels tumble round.

So forlorn, the distant horn,

yet lovely in its pain.

The haunting cry, drifting by,

my joy will never wane.

"...lovely in its pain...the haunting cry, drifting by."

I can relate to how you feel, Jennifer. There's a train that runs through nearby at two in the morning, and I don't even mind being awaken by it. I think next to listening to the rain, it's got to be one of my favorite sounds. I've never been on one, though. How about you?
