This Story

a poem

In this story made
of trees, I am
the unfalling leaf.

Woodsman chops old growth.
Deers rut. Still I refuse
to let go. It’s not

that I won’t. I have
no memory of falling,
of what waits below.

In this story
I never get beyond
once upon.
