so much it echoes
through the arms of soldiers
and the kindness of dear citizens
who shelter me here.

I stand in a place
where others cannot enter,
a guarded land,

I am missing you.

I know we have work to finish,
a duty written in courage and patience.

While every couple celebrates Valentine’s
wrapped in each other’s presence,
you are my *after* Saint Valentine.

His lady waited for him,
praying the war would end soon
