DreamsA Poem by Joan Spahr, Soul PoetryCalling forth the strength to fight your demonsThere's a rattling at my window, There's a creeking in my floor, The doorknob starts to jiggle, There's a shadow 'neath the door. My dreams, it seems, are stirring, Those broken long ago. To weaken and collapse my breath, To collect their broken soul. I hear their whistling whispers, The music they devise, And grabbing hold of long ago They dance amidst my cries. I rise, awake, my eyes ablaze, I swirl with fire and flame, I'll not play their game this night. Resolute, I call out my name. Consumed , their smoke and ashes drift Aloft, through Holy night . I now remember who I am And hug that memory tight. My windows are for gazing toward The promise of the light, Not for boarding out life's stormy past Nor hiding from the fight. - J.
