Really it's a story about the leap of faith travel requires.

Veins of birds

Gurgle through the sky.

Spurt south

To some tropical cut

In the fabric of winter.

Could you ever brave such a bold suicide?

As a kid, I often thought about how brave it was for birds to fly off into the unknown in search of warmer days. What if they ended up flying over the ocean just when the needed to take a breather? How did they have blind faith that warmer weather was indeed out there? Ect. Ect. And I still marvel at their ability to fly in a flock and move as one large organism.

I like how the imagery alludes to blood and specifically gurgling, spurting blood. And the use of the word cut as well. If I had to guess, the imagery would lead me to believe that this was about someone cutting "their" wrist perhaps? I can see how that would take it away from a literal poem about birds given your smart word choices. Either way, I really liked it. I love grand thoughts in small packages. Short poems are great! Well done.

I tried to convince my wife that this wasn't a poem about suicide: it only used suicidal imagery. I was aiming for a poem about taking risks and (for me) my first decision to live abroad. Thanks!

I can definitely see how that could be your inspiration with traveling into the unknown as birds so often do. I also see how you had to convince your wife it wasn't about suicide ☺ It wasn't so much the imagery - which works for both - as much as the suicide sandwich with the poem title and last line including the word suicide. One of my favorite things about poetry is how it can mean so many different things to so many different people. The reader never truly knows what the writer was thinking/expressing and the writer has absolutely no idea what each reader brings with them when reading their piece. To me, it's so freeing. Nice one!
