In This Box

A Poem by Joe Gibson

In This Box

paint me

a rainbow

with shades

of greys

and hues

of blacks

smeared on a

nightclub napkin

use trembling fingers

and blurred vision

as the fire simmers

demeaning your

pitiful clairvoyance

exhausted unlike

the heat crawling

down your throat

a maroon swivel

is your pedestal

so sit tall and pretty

while on your

granulated throne

you’re just a box

under all that

cheap wrapping paper

and once the paper

lay silently on the floor

like your

torn clothing

you will be

thrown away

like every

other

empty box
