The Boston Convention and Expo Center at the Seaport District on Summer Street in Boston, Massachusetts, was flooded with applause due to the graduation ceremony for the Boston Police Department. Pipes were blown, drums were beaten, and oaths were sworn by the graduates. Every recruit took their jobs with overwhelming excitement, especially Caucasian Boston native Michael Wheeler. Like his fellow graduates, he took his new Boston Police uniform and gear with a smile on his face. Like his fellow graduates, he was assigned a field training officer. Michael’s trainer was an older Caucasian male officer. The trainer had an ivy league hairstyle and a beard. “Hey there rookie. My name is Daniel James. What’s yours?” said Daniel. “I am Michael Wheeler.” said Michael. “Well Wheeler, you’re ready for duty?” said Daniel. “Of course.” said Michael. “Great. Let’s go.” said Daniel as he led Michael to a police patrol car. For the entire day, Michael spent it overshadowing Daniel as he conducted traffic stops around Boston. At the same time, Michael couldn’t help but stare at the missing people’s posters all over Dorchester and Roxbury. Each poster had pictures of African American men of various ages. “This is going great. I’m loving this job.” said Michael. “That’s great to hear. This city needs us.” said Daniel. “Exactly.” said Michael. As Daniel continued to patrol Boston on Blue Hill Avenue, Michael noticed him watching a lone African American man wearing a white suit walking down the street whistling. The man’s black hair was curly. “Just look at them.” said Daniel. “Look at what? That man who’s just minding his business just like you should do with yours?” said Michael. “Word of advice Wheeler. You should never align his kind with us.” said Daniel as he began to follow the unknown man. “What the hell are you even talking about right now? Why the hell are you following that man. He’s not doing anything.” said Michael. “He is. He’s being a monkey.” said Daniel as he turned the police siren on and stopped the unknown man. “What are you doing? Leave that man alone!!” said Michael. “He is not a man.” said Daniel as he stepped out of his car. Michael followed Daniel as he relentlessly approached the unknown African American man. The unknown man turned around and said, “Is there any problem sir?” “Yes. Show me your identification.” said Daniel. “Look sir. You don’t have to do that. You can just go.” said Michael. “Okay.” said the unknown man as he continued to walk. “No!! Stop right there!!” said Daniel as he stomped on the ground and placed his hand on his handgun. “Daniel, you need to f*****g stop this, or I will report you to the commissioner.” said Michael as he grabbed onto Daniel’s wrist. Daniel then turned to look at Michael and said, “What did you say?” “I said stop or I will report you to the commissioner.” said Michael. “Yeah, and who do you think they’re going to side with? You who only have one day of experience or a trainer like me. I have been in this force way longer than you have rookie.” said Daniel. “Time in this doesn’t make you any less of a power-hungry jerk than you’re being right now. So, I will say it again. Stop this.” said Michael. Daniel broke free from Michael’s grip and said, “I can’t believe you. You’re chosen the wrong side. Why fight for these monkeys?” “Honestly, I really want to take a swing at you. I’ll tell you why I’m passionate about this. My wife is black.” said Michael. “Wait a damn minute. You’re with a monkey?” said Daniel. As Michael and Daniel continued to debate, the unknown man walked away. “Look you better not ever say that word again around me. We’re leaving right now. I’m punching out and going home. Take me back to the station to get my car.” said Michael as he walked back to the patrol unit and turned the siren off. Daniel grumbled as he noticed that the African American man was no longer present which made him bang his fist on the patrol unit before he got back into the vehicle. “You disappoint me, Wheeler. Why would you waste your time in protecting them?” said Daniel as he drove Michael back to the station as demanded. “Because I have compassion, decency and respect for other people. Also, I judge people based on their actions and not their skin color. I don’t care if they’re white, black, green, orange or any other color in existence. You need to understand that you’re making people who love to hate us right.” said Michael. “Like I care.” said Daniel. “I honestly hope that one day you will see the truth for yourself and change your ways. Good night.” said Michael as he left the patrol unit, got to his car and drove back home to his house in South Boston on M Street. Despite of what happened with Daniel seeing his beloved wife Shawna brought relief to the frustration in his heart. “Welcome home honey.” said Shawna giving Michael a big smile on her face. “I’m glad to be home babe.” said Michael as he kissed his wife. Michael did all he could to forget about what happened with Daniel as he ate his plate of food. “So how was your first day on the police force babe?” said Shawna. “It was quite eventful.” said Michael. “Did you get into a fight or something?” said Shawna. “Well, I did but not with a suspect. It was with my trainer.” said Michael. “About what babe?” said Shawna. “Daniel, my trainer stopped an innocent African American man for nothing. He was just walking down the street minding his own business. He called him a monkey. I can’t tell you how angry I was with him.” said Michael. “He said what?” said Shawna. “He called an innocent man a monkey. When I heard him say that you came into my mind knowing that you’re a human rights worker.” said Michael. “I’m glad that you thought of me during that. That tells me that you care about me and what I do.” said Shawna as she held onto Michael’s cheeks. “I do. You know I do. I do because I love you.” said Michael. “You’re the best babe.” said Shawna as she giggled and kissed Michael. And with that, Michael spent the rest of the night with his wife. The very next day, Michael woke up in his bed alone. After taking a shower and getting dressed, Michael headed to the kitchen. The mixture of the fragrance of coffee and strawberries wafted into Michael’s nose as he headed for the kitchen. The rookie police officer screamed as he found his wife on the floor unconscious. There was a large red mark around her neck. “Shawna!! Shawna!!!!!” said Michael as he screamed and cried as loud as he could while holding his beloved wife in his arms. Right next to Shawna’s corpse there was a note. On the sheet of paper, it said: “Consider this your punishment monkey lover.” On the other side of the note, it said: “I’m sorry.” The initials S.J. were written on the bottom of the page.

Seriously? No paragraphing, no indentation, and you've done no research into the skills of a profession that has been under development for centuries?

They offer degree courses in Commercial fiction Writing. Would they do that if what they teach isn't necessary?

School-day writing skills are nonfiction and they cannot be made to work for fiction. That holds true for grammar and punctuation, too. To write fiction you need the skills of the profession because nothing-else-works.

So, dig into a good book on the basics, like Debra Dixon's, GMC: Goal Motivation & Conflict.
