Archipelago

Archipelago

A Poem by JR

We have become

islands, an archipelago

with the sea between us

silent, and gray,

rimmed with fog

our beaches are barren except

the ordered thump of waves and

cries of the lonely sea birds;

Once we were a continent

but then the waters rose,

the waters rose

and covered the earth

what was sand between us is

drowned in gray and green swirl

machinery of rain and storm

has carved channels and

spawned sea beasts;

I fear the waters

will never recede,

that this continent

has broken into islands

separated

gray and green

those sands

will never touch again.
