I can see it

I can see it

A Story by Jon Roggie

The Garden has grown.

"Tortoise!"

I can't describe the voice.
  You need to be there.
Trust me.

"Tortoise!
   You hear me?"

How can you tell if a tortoise is listening?
We actually pretend we aren't quite often.
Not like it is easy for us to run from a conversation.

Finally,
he hops in front of me.

The Toad.

"Are you paying attention to this place?"

I try to pull off a snore....

"You used that trick last week."

This is why there are so few tortoises.
One is sacrificed,
so the others have the chance to escape.

"Toad.  What now?"

"It doesn't look the same!"

"What doesn't look the same?"

"The Garden!"

"Yes?"

"It keeps changing!"

"Yes?"

It finally clicks.

"Things are moving pretty fast, aren't they Toad?"

"I don't understand..."

"Take a nap.  It will do you good."

I watch the Toad burrow in,
 finding a place to sleep,
at least until the proper time.

Not a bad sort,
 little bit flighty.
Like his great-grandfather.

Moving at different speeds,
it is often hard to grasp the different reality.

I continue my walk in the Garden.
