Who knows

Who knows

A Poem by Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)

Who knows
If we will meet the morn
I will however gently
Speak this prayer of old
'If I should die
Before I wake
I pray the Lord
My soul to take'
Like that old childhood
Prayer my mother gently speak
I used to hear her prayers with me
And that particular verse
It always rattled me
Quite out of sight
But never mind
I still recite it now
And off to sleep
I gently go
But if I do die
Before I sleep
Like that childhood prayer of old
I know
I'll mourn forlorn and miss my family so
And my air and sun and moon
And waves and stars
But in my heart of hearts
I know I've nearly run
My leap

I like how you depict a simple thought you have as you drift off to sleep, in such a meaningful way. I often find meaning in simple re-occurring thoughts, and I feel I can use your poem as encouragement and inspiration to define the meaning I find in my own expieriences. I am curious about what you mean by "my leap".

Thank you for review
Love the title and poem- so very true! My mom taught me that exact prayer Julie, and it frightened me too when I was little. Now, it's comforting. Lovely flow to this and so touchingly expressed. I'll think of you when I say prayers now.:)

i like this....the twist on the theme....how the one who passes will mourn the loss of those he or she left behind...

Yes I know thank you
I t sounds that in the early hours you have come to terms with that most natural, yet feared event, dying. But none of us really knows what happens, but as you say in your childhood prayer, 'I pray the Lord,
My soul to take.' Who knows, it might be a lovely surprise!
