Chalk Ink wells Slant writing ✍️ Blackboards Giggles Passing notes Gossip kids Friends laughter 🏀 sport Shooting goals at netball Sucking 🍊 oranges Autograph books Signing our friendships away Sports Favourite teachers '🏫 School barn dances Pride of Erin Gawky boys With sweaty palms Light hands on my shoulder My crush never knew That was primary High school Big kids I’m small again The smallest of the lot Sex Ed classes What the hell My parents never told me Anything ! Feeling alone Out of the big groups Hiding in library shelve aisles At lunch waiting for the bell Too shy to line up for tuck shop Skinny Too awkward to eat Self. Conscious I invented the word Too shy to get on school bus Rather walk for miles No sport Writing sick notes for gym Work Left school age 15 Happy to go Into real world Real work Real money Fashion Clothes shoes Bank uniforms Boyfriends Learnt quickly what they Wanted Didn’t give it Church Fellowship groups Christianity Family tragedy Marriage Kids More family deaths Separation Divorce More boyfriends More alcohol I’ve come full circle But I’m not skinny Nah that’ll never happen How can you cram Nearly 62 years into a page The words stick in my teeth Like leftover spinach From the pizza Last night The toothpick is handy But the words Are messy Nor edible They have lost their sweet joy Of youth All that’s left Is a distant memory A feeling I close my eyes Who was that Girl ' Where did she go © 2020 Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)Reviews
