Annual reunionA Poem by Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)Two old men friends see each other annually for a drink or three
Occasional old
Fast talking friends Eat greasy Fast food And drink on Good fine wine Like spirits That will Never die Not ever The clock ticks Midnight Then one The hallway Has ghosts of yesterday But they know It’s all temporary And Prefer not to Think about all that Pouring And laughing Is better than crying And being alone There They sleep In Embers of smoke And wake To the sound Of their Frightening Loud heartbeat Warning them It’s day Wake up You stupid Old Men Day has come Make a mark On the world All they can do Is ring their Worried wives Who thought they Demised in the night So coffee looks good Just like it always did It ran like fire through their Bones Ate into their Souls Till the day Looked better Than that glass Staining red on White rug From last nights Reunion Of two friends That meet Every year It could be our last mate As he said goodbye What rubbish I’ll see you Same time next year As he waved To his friend Turning and whistled An old tune Of familiar good cheer © 2026 Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere) |
