A Liver in the HouseA Poem by Juni Parks"A man sees in the world what he carries in his heart." FaustDeliver a new born to our home and see the prayers in my mother's eyes and, hear the cheers from my father's cries Deliver a new liver to our house and taste the bitter stirring in my mother's tea and smell the anxiety in my father's plea 'Deliver me from this new evil' my mother prayed, rather loudly 'Inside me, twisting me, a boll weevil' my mother insisted, continuously 'Saved your life, that weevil' my father whispered, quietly 'Saved you for me and our family' my father sighed, silently 'Deliver me a liver with heavenly purity' my mother cried, impatiently 'Treasure my body, my blameless heart' my mother mumbled, incessantly 'Your old liver, gone, black and torn apart' my father breathed, carefully 'A new liver, true, and for you, a godly art' my father claimed, lovingly 'Alive with evil is this man's weevil' my mother slandered, unforgivably 'Save me, tear from me this vile upheaval' my mother snarled, frighteningly © 2014 Juni Parks |
