On The Other Side

On The Other Side

A Poem by Karen Ankers

On The Other Side

stagnant darkness snakes the sky

shadows a silence lullabied by

those still allowed to sing

the echoing sirens who tied our hands

prescribe a quiet time

slow down they say

weave space to dream

but there is nothing left to dream of

to dream we must disturb

the choking

poisoned

scattered crumbs

that led us like hungry children

to the place we thought was safe

when we shivered at the shadow’s touch

they warmed us with burning promises

when we said we could not see

they told us our eyes would soon adjust

to the ever growing dark

and when clothed in creeping cobwebbed cold

we tripped over words left out to die

fell beside dreams that never lived

and reached for the morning that used to wake

on the other side of night
