Where are you from?

Where are you from?

A Poem by k.m.b.

Where I’m from is so much more than a spot on a map. I am from spending day after day at grandma’s house. I am from playing in the little blue pool in the backyard, splashing the grumpy old cat. I am from building towers with big cardboard blocks, knocking them down, and building them up again. I am from sleepovers with my big sister. I am from building snow forts with my next door neighbor. I am from the pain of losing my first dog. I am from reading “the seven silly eaters” with my dad every night before bed. I am from ordering Chinese takeout for dinner every week. I am from sitting around the campfire with my family on muggy summer nights. I am from the occasional trip to Lake Michigan. I am from wrestling with my brother on the living room floor, until our mom would yell “settle down you two.” I am from big family gatherings, on Christmas, on Thanksgiving, on Easter, or whenever we all felt like playing some cards. I am from Fourth of July up at my aunt’s cottage, taking the boat out on the lake and watching the fireworks. I am from little sibs weekend at MSU with my sister. I am from tailgates and the love of Spartan football. I am from admiring the beautiful fall colors. I am from curling up with my mom on the couch and watching Full House. I am from the uneasiness of moving. I am from Mrs. Lalick’s second grade classroom where I met my best friend. I am from art classes every Wednesday after school. I am from jumping in the leaf piles with my cousins. I am from so much more than just a town.

A beautiful tying together of various memories that seem personal to you. It is true that a person is far more than a face and a home is far more than a place. This reminded me of a quote from one of my favourite fantasy authors, Robin Hobb. "Home is a people, not a place." Very well done, keep writing!
