I’m Trapped,
Death is near,
Blackness is everywhere.
All you can hear is the crackling fire.
I close my eyes tightly,
As if it will somehow save me.
I hear someone,
Calling my name.
I open my eyes,
But no one is there.
The voice seems to be coming from everywhere,
Then I realize it’s from below me.
I put my ear to the rug,
And listen to the muffed voice.
I remove the rug trying to hear better.
I feel a handle,
And pull up a trapdoor.
I don’t know where it leads,
But anywhere is better than here.
I fell my feet hit the rungs on a ladder,
All I can do is hope the ladder continues as far as the pit.
I descend several feet,
Then slip because a rung of the ladder is missing,
Normal I could catch myself,
only it’s dark,
And my palms are dripping with sweat.
I fall,
Into the darkness.
My head hits the ground.
Nothing.
Nothing at all.
I don’t know how long I lay there,
But when I awake I realize I am in a tunnel.
I get up,
And run through the tunnel.
I reach a wall.
The only way to go is up.
I grab the ladder,
And again climb into the darkness.
I reach the top.
I’m outside,
In the pale moonlight.
The house is in front of me,
In ruins.
I don’t know who was calling my name,
But I survived.
I’m alive,
To die another day.
