ChristinaA Story by Joshua KepferThis is a story in 200 words.Hey can we meet up? Her smooth voice sinks
into my ears, though it’s only a text. Yeah do you want me to take the bus? No it's fine, I'll drive. Her
old stick-shift self-consciously rolls up. She hates people watching her drive,
but I can’t help staring. The dark blanket of hair sways across her back as she
hastily gets out, eyes oddly avoiding mine. I
Remember us in the dark sitting on the rock above the lake. All I could see
were the emeralds staring at me from Christina's face. We argued, but my cheeks
weren’t red. Sadly, she said people needed to be afraid sometimes, and I
couldn't agree. I
Remember laying on the dewy grass, trying to convey how I felt without sounding
cheesy. She asked me what I meant. "It means I love you," I finally
conformed. She smiled and kissed my ear. I
Remember her still saying she felt afraid. Too many people had let her down,
abandoned her. Heroically, I said I never would. Now
She’s holding my hand telling me I’m not dependable and that she’s leaving. She
wants me to say something, to fight for her, I know, but I can’t possibly find
any words. © 2016 Joshua Kepfer |
