“Quick, get over here.” The person helped me up and pushed me into a nearby bush. I dared not to disobey. Next thing I know I was sitting against a tree with my back pack against me. I could see his crisp skin from being outside. He was about my age, deep blue eyes you could get lost in them just like an ocean. He had tasseled dusty brown hair. The smell he had was smoke, I had learned to like it but I now loved the smell of smoke.
“What ar….” He clasped his hand over my mouth before I could day anything?”
“Shhh…” He pointed over to where I ounce was. It was covered with four wheelers and hikers. We waited until they were long gone. We walked slowly. “Sorry about that I just couldn’t risk getting caught.” He lightly kicked the dirt with his hands in his pockets looking away as if he were ashamed.
“It’s fine. Who are they?” I asked.
“Forest troopers looking for lost kids, mostly runaways.” He looked at me with his eyes not ashamed anymore but happy.
“Okay, do you think I am a runaway?”
“By the looks of it…yeah.” He smirked looking straight ahead.
“You don’t know my story. What about you, why are you hiding from them?” I looked up at him. It was slightly taller than me.
“Yeah I guess I am a runaway.”
“Why?” He looked at me very confused.
“What?”
“Why didn’t you just let them find me?”
“I thought you would tell them were your heading, the smoke houses.”
“The where?” He now looked mad. Not at me but himself.
“We should set up here, stay the night.” He hurried doing anything that avoided me. I dropped my pack and looked for wood. We cleared an area for fire in complete silence. I glanced at him every so often. After that I sat down on a log near the fire we started. “You’re not much of a true runaway.” Pointing to the back pack beside me.
“Why do you say that?” He sat down across of me.
“You have stuff, you’re more prepared.” I could tell he choose his words carefully.
“Well I’m not going back so I thought I should be somewhat prepared for the worst.” He looked quite impressed.
“What’s in it?”He was interested but instead staring at the fire.
“Not much just some matches, first aid kit, rope, jeans, shirt, gloves, and a knife. Umm ponytails, brush and some water bottles. O and I got some dried food and a few more things.” I was happy with what I got. I really enjoyed the wind breaker. I was glad someone had pointed it out.
“What no makeup.” A slight chuckle slid behind his arrogant tone.
“I don’t need to look pretty for anybody.” I put emphasis the last part.
“No but really your pretty smart most people leave in a day or two but you’re defiantly trying to make it.”
“Thanks.”
“So what are you running from?” The wind was rolling in and the fire went out but I didn’t care it was still light out.
“My sister died and my dad really got into some bad things. My mom wouldn’t leave him. Some enemies of my dad killed her. I managed to get away before he got me.” I didn’t try to sugar coat it. No point.
“Why not call the police.”
“They would just place it all on me so I ran.” He stood up.
“Rikki by the way.” He turned ready to do something.
“Amber. So what’s your story?” He clenched his fist.
“We should build a shelter.” He walked into the forest looking for something to pick up. I walked into the opposite direction.
“How big?”
“What?” I was starting to get annoyed.
“The shelter.”
“Oh, we don’t need one.” I heard him pick through sticks. I didn’t care I could smell rain coming through. I started to build a lean-to. Ounce I finished night started to fall. The moon faintly showed and Rikki started a crackling fire. I sat down listening to the crickets and toads in the back ground. “I’ve been on my own since I was ten,” I could tell this was his story he was staring aimlessly into the fire. “My dad left my mom when I was two. My mom didn’t deal with it well. She tried to be the best single mom to me, but she couldn’t handle it. By the time I was eight she started drinking. It was at least one bottle of wine a night. Sometimes harder alcohol, one night she got mad at me for a reason I didn’t know. Next thing I know she was throwing empty bottles at me. I ran away I have never seen her since.” The pain in his eyes was so true, so clear. It pained me because I knew somehow I felt like I had lived through that. Only in my own way. It started to sprinkle the fire went out he knew he could sleep in my lean-to I fell asleep fast. Again no dreams but I felt pain and sadness. When I woke to hear crackling I just thought it was Rikki. When I glanced over I saw him lying there. I shook his back to get his attention. “What.” He said very annoyed he rubbed his eyes trying to get up,
“I heard something I think someone is out there.” I pointed.
“You scared of some squirrel.” He got up I heard his foot step and a muffled word. I slowly got up. “RUN!”
