Perhaps

I should have looked into your eyes.

And listened with an open mind.

I doubted your sincerity then. Now

I question my willingness to look inside. 

Perhaps

I should have taken my shield down,

allowed myself to feel.

Allowed what was twisted out of joint,

Time to straighten and heal.

Perhaps

 

I analyzed too much.

Talked myself right out of us.

Found the scales wanting and it was time to leave,

But what did quitting on us achieve?

Perhaps 

I am now wiser.

And would not take love’s kiss so lightly,

I should have hugged you more tightly.

And whispered in your ear,

The things I held about you so dear.

I've found similar situations and I will say,if your heart is kept in a shell,
yes,you are protected and safe,but may not feel the warmth of the sun,
or rain on your face,or the slightest touch of loves kiss on your lips...
some will always wonder,
"What could have been"...if only...perhaps...some day...
then you end up like me writing sad stuff about pains of lost loves,
wanting somebody to help you make new memories and help you forget the past.
