could that be my destiny after all?A Stage Play by kushkushNonSENSe
harold never knew that after all his efforts, after his hardwork, he will end up with nothing, but money...
money, they told him when he was young, was the only way out from the miserable suburban environment in which he was born. harold was definitely different from his peers. despite having the same difficult economic background as his friends, he had a particular quality that could give him anything in the world - he had confidence in himself, and therefore knew he could be whatever he wanted. and so, he set on to the path of prosperity. he dreamt of a luxurious life. at least he believed that was what he needed. determined as ever, he invested himself totally in his school work. he never missed his classes. he went early to school so that he could ask his teachers questions. as soon as he returned home, he would allow himself a few hours of television, and then, back into his copybooks, doing homework until late at night. harold was undoubtedly progressing in his studies. he was raffling every academic prizes. his parents were proud of him. they could boast with their neighbours for having given birth to such an intelligent boy. but harold was unknowingly distancing himself from real life. he was becoming mechanical. unsurprisingly, harold had few friends. his everyday life had now become a routine. of course he was always first in class. of course he won prizes regularly. but no one was seeing the harm behind this success. harold was forgetting his culture. he did not see the real meaning of life. friendship, laughter, sadness, pain, jealousy, love... he was missing them all. unfortunately, that was the price to pay when seeking material gain. the subtle pleasures of life have to be forgone... harold soon received a seat at the best high school in the country. some years later, he was admitted in the most prestigious university, and soon after that, he graduated brilliantly. throughout his life, harold was constantly being felicitated for what he was achieving in his studies. he has invited in many receptions, being represented as the defavourised boy who did succeed and entered the mainstream. harold felt great. this feeling was filling the hole he began feeling deep inside himself. a hole caused by the feeling of having passed by pleasures of adolescence. pleasures he was seeing on the faces of many adolescents who were not so invested in their studies, but rather spending time with people they loved. harold did not want to feel as if he had taken the wrong decision. he forced himself to believe that he was someone exceptional, that he was gifted. as a result, his ambitions increased four-folds. he needed to become more popular. and thus the vicious circle of materialistic gain started. money had become his sole preoccupation. the more he had, the more he needed. he was of course doing an excellent work in his very well paid job and it was more than natural to remunerate him properly. but, harold at this point, had forever lost the true goal of life, happiness. he had cut all ties and relationships for he just did not have time for them. money was making him arrogant. he was feeling superior, for that was the only thing that could excuse the gaps left in his life. when he reached the forties years of age, he began feeling lonely. he wanted company, but he had missed the train. he was too old to find a partner of his taste. money, sure could give him one, but he desired true love, and that was very difficult to obtain. the only way to forget about his failure was to indulge into alcohol.... and everyone knows, getting out of this mess is hard... harold ended up lonely, unless you consider his money...... © 2008 kushkush |
