Very effective, the repetition of "simple, small", to ensure I get the quick glanced moment, how swiftly something passed between you, and I like how you let the reader know what that gesture did for you. I love "..small/fanned hand:/unarmed" ... It makes me wonder if you were serving when this occurred? If so, that deepens it for me.
