Hard a LeeA Poem by Donald MeikleAdrift in folding seas of memory Floating aimless as thought convolutes The horizons and viewpoints fade in sunset cloud Etched wetness of long dried tears ridge equal lines of skin drift Run in wrinkled sunlit squinted remembrance Of days so bright and bouncing waves Race delightedly dancing on hard wet sanded beaches By forgotten swollen tidal wakes of sodden sicknesses Ever longer smashing on cracked uneven jetties For what was her name who laughed so freely Or rolled in naked abandon in wet white curls of sandy surf Really what ocean was that salty shimmer of recall Ever down all the days and days of unseen consequence Our bouncing bruised battery by bloody Fate's retaliatory fury Resmiling now in earned satisfaction for what was faced so fiercely Now counting costs in complacent blindness of forgotten dreams One fist clénches one finger raised in steady defiance While clouds sail by in studied indifference © 2014 Donald MeikleReviews
