Tapping Time

Tapping Time

A Poem by Donald Meikle

Shivery dawning sun
Spring breeze denies its warmth
An old friend's wool plaid shirt
retrieved in sleepy haste
routs the breeze.
Warm memories defeat
the death that took him.
Spring beckons me once more
awakening the aches of movement
teasing green in bursting buds
tossing last years yellow holly down
as baby leaves emerge.
Why is everything so clock of late?

warm memories defeat the death... yes. My ex husband always remembered his dads death... I tried to encourage him to remember his dads birthday instead but he said that wasn't the point. Oh well. A beautiful poem Donald... I should imagine you were one hell of a friend to him, with many nights down the pub eh?

A touching poem and I like the way you compare how your friend's shirt defeats the breeze and your memories of him. That last line is thought provoking. But I think the flow would work better if you didn't commence lines with a capital and I would be tempted to use a different synonym for defeat - perhaps rout.

A dead friends shirt brings back memories as it protects you from the elements. A nice thought of remeberence of your friend.
