patient patientA Poem by Donald Meikle
Sitting in sleepy patience
Awaiting results of surgeon's knives Surrounded by tired old veterans Of wars mostly forgotten Relived by reading their worn old hats As memories of body parts in bombed out streets Return from childhood nightmares To interfere with how much longer they'll be Shaving cancer from my temple The pain will come later Something else to wait for while Sitting in sleepy patience
