patient patient

patient patient

A Poem by Donald Meikle

Sitting in sleepy patience
Awaiting results of surgeon's knives
Surrounded by tired old veterans
Of wars mostly forgotten
Relived by reading their worn old hats
As memories of body parts in bombed out streets
Return from childhood nightmares
To interfere with how much longer they'll be
Shaving cancer from my temple
The pain will come later
Something else to wait for while
Sitting in sleepy patience

Ouch - such a cruel tale behind this poem, thoughts and happenings hard to contemplate and understand yet somehow, written superbly, movingly.

Wow! Nice write, sobering topic. Very contemplative piece.
