Your description of the poem reminded me of an essay by Achebe on postcolonialism. He also stresses the need to be in the middle, but I think he was talking about a middle position in postcolonial thought.

The Education of a British-Protected Child. I think it was in this work. I am not sure though. Achebe describes his perspective as “a view of events neither from the foreground nor the background, but [from] the middle ground”. This is basically it.
