I... actually like this one. I'm not sure if "like this one" is the correct language for the subject matter.... so I'll say I think it touches upon a certain sort of malaise we've all sort of got, and does so effectively. Also, points for Brubeck. Dave Brubeck and Bill Evans are the reasons I ever first took to playing the piano (poorly). Geniuses, both.

I find Evans and Brubeck, more than any others of their era, found a unique sort of touch on the instrument, Evans especially. But I love Take Five. It's such a subtly ferocious recording, the drummer is brilliant too. Music makes the existential horror of it all go away a little bit, and for that, I am thankful. Cheers, Davidgeo. Stay sane in insane times, as best as we may.

I agree with you on Brubeck and Evans being at the top of their era. How do you feel about Duke Ellington? It's definitely from a different era, different music, but I can hear the Duke in Brubeck and Evans... and even all the way to this day with Regina Spektor

Different instrument... but... I haven't really listened to jazz in a long time, and you've got me thinking about it now. I always thought Mingus was brilliant. As a bassist and composer. Jaco Pastorius had his moments. I'm scratching my diseased memory and coming up short with others, though there certainly were others. Miles Davis, of course. Naw, jazz is good for ya. Classical too, but that's a different conversation.

Him and Ella Fitzgerald got together and made some very, very fine music. It's 1940's era jazz so there's a big band element to it. Are you familiar with Louis Cole? He's doing something like that currently but... with multiple genres of music mashed together. Literally. Listen the "Take the A Train" by Duke and Ella and then listen to "F It Up" by Louis Cole... that's like time traveling in jazz land

He is staggeringly good. I'm only so into big band but I will check it out tomorrow for sure. Did always have a soft spot for Louis Armstrong though. Known more as a showman than a musician, but he was good. But anyways. Be well Davidgeo.

You as well John Sullivan. Thanks for stopping by.
A clean hit of truth, how we complicate everything to avoid the emptiness underneath. Sharp and spare.
