Never Look Down

This is a true story. The little boy in this story has and always will be a major part in my life. Enjoy!

This very cute story begins

on a nice and beautiful day 

a large group of boys

went out to play

The leader of the pack

had to do a good job

to be entertaining 

for his nice little mob

Walking into the park

He spots a very tall tree

Standing there with pride

for one and all to see

Staring into his friends

Studying every single face

He says "I'm going to climb

To the top 1st, wins the race"

 

It took only one moment

they attacked the tree's trunk

hands on every branch 

into the cracks, their feet sunk

Halfway up the large beast

with large shouts and a frown

overtaken by feelings of fear

the boys came jumping down

Even the pack's leader

couldn't take the heights

He jumped down and said

"I think we'll stick to kites"

As they began to leave 

they heard a child's scream

"wait up!" from the treetop

"I am part of the team"

When he finally came down

they didn't believe their eyes

the youngest of them all 

has overcome the tree's highs?

When the little one went home

his father heard his son's tale

and asked him what it was

that helped him not to fail 

"Father, it's very simple

the others looked down 

when seeing how high 

they all came jumping down 

But I always looked up 

on my goal, I kept my eye

with keeping that in mind

I was able to focus on climbing high"

I enjoyed this a lot - I love poems that tell stories and it was very vivid. I could see the whole thing in my mind's eye. Lovely work!

I love the second stanza. The dialogue mixed into the stanzas make this poem lively and inspiring. Great job.
