The Givers And The Takers

The Givers And The Takers

A Poem by Brandon Houser

The doctor has the cure
But first you must acknowledge
You're diseased

The clown may have the laughter
But first you must acknowledge
You're displeased

You may grow to find
The truths you've known
Are not true, only faker

And the lovers that you cling to
There were never givers
Only takers

You may ask for safety
But first you must accept
You are in danger

You can always go back home
But first you must accept
You are the stranger

Because when you're sitting lonely
You'll find you're not a mover
Or a shaker

And in the end you must decide
If you can live with the givers
Or the takers

You can lock away your past
But just make sure
You have the only key

You may despise the slaves of life
But just make sure
You're living with the free

But please don't ever ask me
What's the difference
Between a lover and a hater?

To that I'll say
Just ask yourself
Are you a giver, or a taker?

Again, welcome to WritersCafe.

This is a very captivating piece.

It’s deep, psychological, thought provoking.

It does lack a bit of direction. But it doesn’t take away from its effectiveness as a poem.

Enjoyable read. Insightful, collective thoughts.

Profound work. Most people can be classified as one or the other which is disheartening. Some have extraordinary ways to mask their true personas. Unveiling comes too late.
I really like this!

As you said, "It's never too late."

Welcome to Writer's Cafe. And no, I am not the site greeter, like you I joined as well - albeit a fair while back.

You mentioned the hard truths most of us face in this work - its relevance is evident

Brandon, this reads like someone sorting through the hard truths we grow into. The repetition works well, and the final question lands with quiet honesty.
